Our genetic recovery service is aimed at either high value or genetically rare animals that have come to the end of their life on farm. The process involves removal of the ovaries from a cow or sheep at the time of slaughter, extraction of oocytes and then standard procedures for IVF production of embryos. Ovaries can be collected either on farm or at the abattoir. For salvage of Johnes positive animals, please see the Beef IVF page.
One example of a successful recovery was a British Blue cow that had permanently injured her right hind leg. She was euthanised on farm and her ovaries were taken back to our lab where 10 embryos were successfully frozen for the owner.
